Stronger Action Needed Against Digital Hate Speech

On the International Day for Countering Hate Speech (June 18), the Council of Europe emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to tackle online abuse, particularly against marginalized groups.

Hate speech targeting minorities, migrants, LGBT+ people, and human rights defenders continues to rise across the Western Balkans. Civil society organizations are calling for stronger laws, faster response from tech platforms, and more accessible victim support services. Legal aid, psychosocial support and digital safety training have become essential tools for defenders and communities at risk.

BFF sees this as a priority area — not only to respond to attacks, but to proactively secure digital civic space.
