Balkans Forward Foundation
We exist to push for greater equality, dignity, and opportunity in the Balkans. Our work is centered around three key goals: building practical skills for new leaders, developing concrete solutions to move stalled parts of the European integration process, and creating safe spaces (both physical and digital) where change can happen. We focus on communities that are too often excluded from public life -LGBT+ people, Roma, youth, and others whose voices remain on the margins. Our mission is to support them in becoming visible, active, and equipped to shape the societies they live in. We believe that no meaningful progress can happen without those who are directly affected being at the center of the solution.
We develop leadership skills that aren’t taught in schools or universities, especially for people from underrepresented or vulnerable backgrounds.
We work to identify areas within the European integration agenda where realistic progress is possible – and propose practical, targeted actions that unlock change.
At the same time, we work to remove the barriers that prevent individuals and civil society groups from acting freely and safely. Whether it’s online hate, lack of institutional access, or shrinking civic space, we respond with clear, grounded strategies that put people and communities first. Our approach is rooted in regional experience but open to global ideas. We are politically neutral, but never neutral on justice and human rights. We collaborate with activists, professionals, and institutions to build momentum for change that is local, achievable, and lasting. Above all, we believe that progress doesn’t come from the centre, but from the edges – from those who’ve been excluded and who now have the courage, tools, and support to move forward.
