Rise of Anti-Gender Movements Threatens Civic Space in the Balkans

Across the Western Balkans, anti-gender movements have increasingly undermined human rights by targeting equality-based reforms, especially those related to LGBT+ rights and inclusive education.

These campaigns are often framed as “defending tradition” and are backed by both local religious groups and foreign influence networks. As a result, Pride marches, women’s rights initiatives, and even basic sexual education programs face growing resistance.

The shrinking civic space makes it harder for marginalized voices to engage publicly or safely. This trend reinforces the urgent need to protect inclusive spaces – both online and offline – where free expression and democratic participation can flourish.
